Objective

Protection of individual freedoms, prevention of all kinds of discrimination and equality are the most basic requirements for allocating social peace and a fair city. But unfortunately, Istanbul, which has a unique form with its cultural diversity throughout history, creates various disadvantages in Istanbul based on gender, income, age, and ethnic or cultural differences.

Polarization, discrimination and restricted individual freedoms between different social or cultural groups are becoming increasingly chronic problems with the influence of national policies. However, the inability to achieve gender equality, which has been a fundamental problem in Turkey for many years, has negative consequences in terms of representation, limited representation, and participation in economic life. In addition, factors such as the limited participation of young people in decision-making processes and management representations based on age and the isolation of elderly individuals from urban life weaken the social structure and belonging.

Income inequality and poverty, which are the main problems of Istanbul, have been tried to be solved with short-term temporary aid policies, and they have been transferred between generations with the lack of structural solutions. These phenomena are exacerbated by inequalities in access to employment, precarious working conditions and lack of qualified education.

In Istanbul, an “equal and free society” will be built in 2050 by taking care of the differences and taking strength from the diversity.

Goals

Migrations have shaped Istanbul's demographic structure throughout history, enriched the cultural heritage and created a unique nature. However, individuals and communities who migrated for different reasons represent an unequal spatial distribution throughout Istanbul. This situation causes problems such as social segregation and the weakening of the solidarity culture. Furthermore, the invisibility of different social groups in public spaces limits interaction and living together.

In Istanbul, where the current elderly population has a relatively low share, it is expected that one out of every five people will be 65 years or older in 2050. The ageing population is considered a problem worldwide in the context of both the decrease in the workforce and the increasing social service expenditures. Non-governmental organizations, solidarity networks, and urban and social movements are the essential components of social and political life, as they are the fundamental subjects for social solidarity, local democracy and participation. In addition to the townspeople and charity associations predominantly located in Istanbul, there are also few but important rights-based non-governmental organizations. The movements for the right to the city in Istanbul are carried out by organizations and initiatives that participate in the civil space and fight at different scales from the neighbourhood to the districts.
