Deindustrialization in Istanbul

In the first of the "Graduate Talks" organized by the Istanbul Planning Agency, Institute Istanbul, deindustrialization in Istanbul was discussed. Prof. Ferhan Gezici Korten who is also one of the academic advisors of the Istanbul Vision 2050 Office moderated the webinar. The two speakers of the event were Dr. Hatice Kurşuncu who prepared her PhD thesis on deindustrialization processes in the district of Kağıthane; and İsra Hatipoğlu who worked on the effects of deindustrialization on workers for her MA thesis. 

Also working on Gender Policies in the Istanbul Vision 2050 Office, Kurşuncu emphasized the social and spatial consequences of the deindustrialization process in Kağıthane while mentioning the contradictory dynamics of the process. İsra Hatipoğlu, who analyzed the story of the relocation of a large-scale industrial company from the center of Istanbul to Çerkezköy in her master's study, touched on the comprehensive changes created by the deindustrialization process in the nature of the labor force.
